Tractor Repair: International F 806 D, wire alternator, internal regulator

Question
I have a steering problem with this tractor. At first I didn't have any steering at all then added 12 gallons of fluid and the pump makes noise like low fluid but it shows appx. 5 gallons over full on the stick. When I had no steering I had no brakes and the TA wasn't working right however the loader and the 3 point worked but jumpy. Do you have any ideas what could be the problem? Also I am wanting to convert the 12 volt generator to a modern alternator but I don't know what type to use. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tom

Answer
Hello,

Change the filter if you haven't already done so.  Look at my answer to a previous question on 856 steering problem answered on 2/12/09.  This would pertain to your model as well, and will save me having to type out a duplicate answer.

You can either use a Delco 3 wire alternator with internal regulator, or for the simplest hookup, a one wire self- exciting alternator.  The one wire type is a little more expensive and the engine has to be throttled up before it will start charging, but obviously is the simplest to wire up because there is only one wire.
