Tractor Repair: Ford 2000 has trouble staying running, exhaust smoke, needle valve

Question
Started it up after a couple of months-- started fine then had lots of exhaust smoke and backfiring and won't stay running. I am an amateur, anything I can do with this problem? Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

If there is black smoke, it is running too rich.  Make sure the choke is opening all the way up, maybe there is a problem with the cable.  Otherwise, the carburetor float is sticking or there is dirt under the needle valve.
