Tractor Repair: Ford 9N Oil In Antifreeze, blown head gasket, ford 9n

Question
I recently purchased this 1939 9N to restore. I found oil in the antifreeze which on most engines would point to a blown head gasket or cracked head. Since the valves are located under the head where is the closest point for both fluids to come into contact where theres a gasket to fail? Am i dealing with a cracked block?

Answer
Hello,

It's not very likely to be a cracked block, but nothing is impossible.  Even though these flathead engines have the valves in the side of the block, it doesn't mean a head gasket could not cause it.  It would be the easiest thing to check, and the most likely cause.  For difficult ones, sometimes it is necessary to remove the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system, then look up in the crankcase to see where the coolant is coming from.

                  Good luck,

I just realized you said oil in the antifreeze and I thought you said antifreeze in the oil.  The only way oil can get in the antifreeze is if an engine has an oil cooler that leaks internally.
