Tractor Repair: farmall super c, farmall super c, cylinder sleeves

Question
I am having a hard time removing the cylinder sleeves, I have used a pipe and hammer pounding on the sleeve from the bottom up (next to the crank) to try to pound them out with no success! Any suggestions??

Answer
Hello,

Sometimes they can be removed without too much difficulty the way you are doing it, and sometimes not.  I have done it that way a few times and if you have a heavy enough hammer and a heavy solid steel bar instead of a pipe, it usually works, but if they are really tight it will break the bottom of the sleeve before it comes out.  I know not everyone has access to a sleeve puller, but that is the best way and you could make a puller if you can't borrow one.  A metal plate the correct size for the sleeve is fastened to a threaded rod that goes up through the sleeve to a steel bridge that rests on top of the block.  Tighten the nut on top of the rod and it will pull them up until they are loose enough to pull them out by hand.  I have had a few that were so tight that with the nut as tight as I could get it, I still had to drive underneath with the bar and hammer to get them to move.  But once they finally start to move, they pull pretty easy after that.  The main thing is be careful not to damage the block or the crankshaft while hitting with the hammer.
