Tractor Repair: Transmission, hp diesel tractor, clutch disk

Question
Hi Arnie, I have a very basic 28 hp diesel tractor and i was out pushing some
snow and backed out of the pile went from reverse to first and there was
nothing. push in the clutch and it seems to work, but i can shift into gears with
out even using the clutch and it will not go forward or reverse when its in gear.
any ideas what it can be?

Answer
Hello,

If you can shift into gear without pushing the clutch, and you don't feel any resistance on the shift lever and the gears don't grind, then the transmission shafts are not turning.  The clutch disk hub has probably failed.  If it does feel like the gears are turning, then the differential or an axle shaft has failed.  If this machine has a diff lock, engage it and see if it makes a difference.  Without knowing the type of transmission it has, or the brand and model of tractor, I can't offer any other ideas.
