Tractor Repair: Brake noise, massey ferguson, brake noise

Question
Arnie, I know you are not a Massey Ferguson expert but I think my question has more to do with brakes than MF's.  I have a MF50E skip loader and the left brakes are making a very loud groan when the brakes are applied.  The noise does not sound like metal to metal contact and the brakes seem to work fine.  Would you please advise as to what you think the cause of the problem is before I tear into the left wheel brake assembly?
Thank you very much for your time,
Jeff

Answer
Hello,

I don't know what type of brakes this machine has, but if they are dry brakes, it could be brake dust, dirt, or rust accumulated inside, or worn out parts.  If they are wet brakes that run in oil, it could be that the brake disks are worn out, warped, or otherwise damaged.  The wrong type of oil in the machine could cause it also, but then it would affect both sides, not just the left.  When you get it apart, there should be something obvious that will leave no doubt as to the cause of the problem.

                       Good luck,

                             Arnie
