Tractor Repair: tractor hydraulic follow-up, ford tractor, suction screen

Question
Thanks so much for your response.  Now that I am at work I can verify the model number of the Ford tractor -- it's Ford 1920.  I don't think knowing this will shed any light on the situation, but just in case it does I thought I'd throw it out there.  I've pasted the initial question and your reply below.....

Thanks Again,
Will

Your Question was:

BEGINNER

We have a Ford tractor (1590?) which recently got a gash in
a hydraulic line which operates the front-loader.  After
replacing the hose we added more hydraulic fluid, but it
turned out to be too much because further operation caused
the fluid to spew from the reservoir lid.

The gash in the line was noticed only after the front-
loader became markedly weak.  It is still weak, seems to
work intermittently, and has not gotten better over time.

I last noticed that the front-loader completely loses power
if the tractor is on an upward incline of about 20-30
degrees.  After driving back on level ground it takes about
ten seconds of engaging the hydraulics before the front-
loader will work again, after which it will move in all
directions, but weakly.

Any thoughts?  I'm afraid the overfilling did something
serious to it.

Following is the reason:

Hello,

Are you sure about the model?  I have never heard of a 1590 so I have no clue about what type of hydraulic system this machine has.  Overfilling should not have caused any damage that would cause this.  It sounds like the oil level is too low now if it stops working on an incline.   But even if a pump is starving for oil, the hydraulics may be slow and intermittent, but will not be weak.  Weak hydraulics are caused by a bad relief valve or pump.

Answer
Hello,

If the oil level is correct now, and the filter is OK, then possibly there is an internal suction screen on the intake tube to the pump that may be partially restricted.  The pump can be checked with a hydraulic flowrater, or disassembled and inspected.
