Tractor Repair: 1910 Ford tractor clutch, clutch adjustment, clutch pedal

Question
Arnie, I just bought a 1985 model 1910 Ford tractor and the clutch is slipping.  It's a 2 stage clutch and the pto part works fine.  It's the transmission clutch that's slipping.  When I put it in gear and try to take off, the clutch slips. Could you tell me how to adjust the clutch?  Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hello,

Usually the cause of clutch slippage is not having any free travel on the clutch pedal.  If you push very lightly on the pedal with your hand, it should move very easily about 3/4 to 7/8 of an inch before you feel it actually start to move the clutch, and then you will feel the pedal take the normal amount of effort to release the clutch.  If there is no free travel, adjust the rod between the clutch pedal and the arm on the side of the clutch housing.  There will be a threaded clevis or turnbuckle that will adjust the length of the rod.  You will need to shorten the rod to gain more free travel.  This will adjust only the transmission clutch and will not affect the pto clutch.  The pto clutch adjustment is done internally through an inspection cover on the side of the clutch housing.  If the pedal has free travel already, then adjusting it won't help.  In that case, the clutch would be worn out and need to be replaced.

                        Good luck,
