Tractor Repair: Ford N8 tractor, shift lever, gears

Question
QUESTION: I am not experienced at all with this but I purchased a Ford 8 N tractor and preceeded to get the gears stuck.  It will not shift.  I have taken off the cover and can see inside but not sure what to do?  Can you give me some suggestions on how to free the gears?

ANSWER: Hello,

The problem is probably not down inside the transmission, but on the underside of the cover instead.  You can slide the gears until they are all back in neutral, but to fix the problem, look under the cover where the shift rails are moved by the shift lever.  There is either going to be something broken or worn out allowing the bottom of the lever to jump out of place where it engages the shift rails.

QUESTION: I do think that the underside might be a problem but how do I move the gears.  The right shift rail seems to be stuck and will not move when I try to.  Is there a trick to being able to free the gears?  I would like to be able to move the tractor by getting it into neutral.

ANSWER: Hello,

The gears should slide freely on the shafts if you pry them over.  If they don't want to move, have someone rock the back wheels back and forth.  Maybe there's just some pressure on the gears

QUESTION: If the rocking doesn't work should I look at removing the transmission?

Answer
Hello,

If the gears absolutely refuse to move, then there's really no other option than to remove the gears and shafts from the transmission for repairs.  But to me it's unlikely that the gears would be stuck on the shafts.  If it got into 2 gears at once and snubbed the engine, maybe turning the engine backwards will relieve the pressure.
