Tractor Repair: IH 706 Oil Light with Clutch in, oil pressure gauge, oil pressure guage

Question
Sir,

Have a IH 706 oil light on whenever I depress the clutch.  Oil pressure is steady good with clutch in/out (installed new sending unit and also a oil pressure guage).  Oil light goes out with clutch not depressed.  No noticicable change in engine sound.

Hyd filter was recently replaced, replaced elect key, oil light (was working, but bulb broke).  Recently replaced hyd steering lines.

Tractor is "new" to me, runs well the last few months and working to repair what I find along the way.

Thanks!!!!  mac

Answer
Hello,

I know this will sound weird, but it's normal for it to operate that way.

Bear with me until I explain.  For some reason unknown to me, IH did not use seperate oil lights for the engine, and torque amplifier pressures.  They both use the same light.  I know it sounds crazy, but that's just the way it is.  Not only is the light hooked up to the engine oil pressure switch, but also to another switch on the multiple control valve on the left side of the transmission.  Any time you push in the clutch, there is a linkage that opens a dump valve for the torque amplifier.  This allows for easier shifting of gears with the torque amplifier lever forward (hi range)  Otherwise, you would have to pull the TA lever back (low range)to be able to get the transmission out of gear.  When this dump valve opens, it releases the oil pressure to the lock-up clutch in the TA, so the TA oil pressure switch turns on the light whenever the clutch pedal is depressed.  It wasn't until the 66 series tractors that they put an engine oil pressure gauge in the dash, and the light was just for the TA.  If the dump valve is adjusted correctly, the light should go out just before the clutch starts to engage as the pedal is released.  If the light goes out, and you still have to release the pedal a long way before the clutch engages, the nut on the dump valve linkage rod needs to be screwed in farther.  Otherwise, it can cause difficult shifting.

Hope I did not confuse you!

                   Good luck,
