Audio Systems: speaker, voice coils, dc resistance

Question
QUESTION: Hey. I have a tannoy super big red speaker and the other day i was turnig the knobs on the speaker to lower the freq and that and then the sub part cut out it has a horn or what ever it is called in the middle and that still makes the treble like the voices but the outside sub stoped what happend? an i changed the wires it aint the amp

ANSWER: Do you have a vom?  Do you now how to use it?  If so, just check the dc resistance at the speaker terminals.  It should measure some low resistance like 6 ohms plus or minus.  If it is open it will read a very high resistance.

If you do not have a vom, you can use a D cell or 9v battery to test the voice coil connections of the woofer section of the speaker.  Just go to Radio Shack (or boots if in the UK)  or any electronics store and get a pair of clip leads.  Then clip the battery across the speaker terminals.  If the speaker is working you will hear a thud or click sound when the battery is connected.  If you look closely you will also be able to see the cone move slightly inward or outward. If you do not get the click or movement of the cone then the wires going to the voice coil are open or the voice coil itself is open.

Let me know if you need further help.

PS: It is a great speaker, by the way.  Cheers.

QUESTION: Hey i did it and no thud or movment and i tested on other speaker and it thuded so i did it right i think so how can i get it fixed? which is the easiest way and cheapest to get it done?cuz i love this speaker adn i want it fixed bad

Answer
Depends on where you are located.  Most big cities have a speaker repair shop.  They can repair open voice coils and the like - and I think that is what you have.

Or, you can look them up; ship the unit off to one of the shops and have them return it to you.

Above is one such place. You must contact them to discuss if they can repair your specific unit. If the repair is general they could do it,, but if it needs reconing they may not have the correct parts for it - unless they are willing to go across the pond (Tannoy is British) and get it.

Is another one....  there are many.  Google around and you might find one in your own city that you can go in face to face and discuss the repair needs.

Good Luck,
