Tractor Repair: Ford 9 N Tractor repair, ford 9n, tractor repair

Question
We need a tractor for our small farm and have found a Ford 9N near us,but owner says it needs a 12 volt starter and a ring gear.We are not mechanical,so will have to have it done for us.I was wondering if this would be costly and/or indicate other problems? Thanks!!

Answer
  Hello,

The starter is easy to replace, but the tractor will have to be split to replace the ring gear.  Fortunately, they are an easy tractor to split so it shouldn't be too costly.  These problems don't indicate anything else, but are related to each other.  If the starter drive was bad, it damaged the ring gear over time.  You shouldn't need a 12 volt starter.  Even if the tractor was converted to 12 volts, a 6 volt starter will work OK.
