Tractor Repair: 4010 Tractor, ground cables, ampmeter

Question
I seem to have a draw on my 4010 Tractor.  I have to charge the batteries before I use it.  Even when I am using it and shut it down, it won't start without recharging the batteries.  I have taken it to people who work on them here and they can't find the draw.  Any suggestions?

Answer

 Hello,

In order to find a draw, disconnect the ground cables from the batteries.  Now hook a test light or ampmeter between one of the ground cables and the battery post it was removed from.  Make sure everything is turned off including dome lights, radios, etc.  If you have a radio with a clock in it, it's normal to have a couple milli-amp draw for the clock to keep time. If the test light lights up or the ampgauge shows current flow, there is a draw.  Remove fuses one at a time until the draw is gone.  When you get to the fuse that eliminates the draw, you'll know what circuit it's on.  If all the fuses are removed and there is still a draw, disconnect the alternator wires.  I the draw is gone, then the isolation diode in the alternator is bad, and the alternator should be replaced.
