Tractor Repair: 1965 m f 35 utility pto oil seal, bearing retainer, emery cloth

Question
Arnie, the pto oil seal(at the rear of the tractor around the pto shaft) is leaking on my 1965 mf 35 utility.

I want to replace it. I have a new seal & o ring. Can you tell me the best procedure? Thanks, Joe

Answer
  Hello,

Drain the oil, unbolt the seal and bearing retainer and pull the shaft and retainer assembly out.  Remove the snap ring from the retainer and remove the retainer from the shaft and bearing.  Drive or pry the old seal out of the retainer.  Install the new seal with a driver that is just slightly smaller in diameter than the outside of the seal.  A short piece of pipe or large socket works if a seal driver is not available.  Make sure the shaft is clean and smooth. If it has a groove worn into it, polish the surface with fine emery cloth.  Inspect the bearing and replace it if necessary.  Put some oil on the lip of the seal and install the retainer back onto the shaft and bearing, and install the snap ring.  Put the new o-ring onto the retainer and install back into the tractor.  Put the oil back in.
