Tractor Repair: Ford 2000 4 cyl gas, distributor cap, test light

Question
I own a '64 Ford 2000 4 cyl gas. Last year it ran strong and smooth. I use it to break and disk 150X50 garden and mow 2 acres twice a month w/5ft rotary. Bought it in '87. Last used Sep 07. Uses no oil. This spring will crank like crazy but won't fire, I am no mechanic, other than oil & filter etc., so please advise in simple terms.

Answer
  Hello,

Make sure it's getting gas to the carburetor.  Gas does go stale after sitting for a while, but my tractor sits longer than that and I have had no problems.  Check for spark at the spark plugs.  If there is none, check for power to the + terminal of the coil with a test light or voltmeter.  If there is none, check wiring and ignition switch.  If there is power at the coil, check for spark from the coil to the center of the distributor cap.  If there is none, the points and condenser should be replaced.  Also check the condition of the rotor and distributor cap and ignition wires and replace if necessary.  If everything checks out OK and you still have no spark, the coil is probably bad.

              Good luck,
