Tractor Repair: farm pro tractor, crankcase pressure, crankcase breather

Question
I have a farm pro tractor that when it gets to operating temperature it blows oil out of the oil fill cap. Could you please tell me what you think it could be. I live in a small town and the place I bought it closed down and I have no where to get it fixed.

Thank you,
Brian

Answer

  Hello,

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but it's a common problem with small shops selling off-brand tractors.  There are many around here too that are here one day and gone the next.  We have dealers selling Mahindra, Montana, Farm-trac, Daewoo, Lenar, Belarus, and others.  Some of them only handled a brand for a couple months and then switched to something else or closed.

The first thing I would check is the crankcase breather to make sure it's not plugging up and building excess crankcase pressure.  You've probably already done this, but make sure the oil is not overfilled, and is the correct oil.  Also make sure the oil is not diluted and too thinned out.  I am not familiar with Farm Pro, so I don't know what kind of filler cap they use, but I would check if there's something wrong with the cap, maybe a gasket or O-ring damaged or missing.  If it's worse when the  engine is hot, the engine could have too much blow-by from broken or stuck rings, or cracked or burnt piston.  Does it seem to run OK?  Run it with the oil cap removed and see if there's lots of smoke or steam blowing out the fill hole.  If so, then the engine needs internal repairs.
                   Good luck,
