Tractor Repair: Deutz D6206, shift fork, lever assembly

Question
I have a Deutz D6206 that will not shift out of low gear.  It is in low gear in the neutral position.  When I shift into reverse, it doesn't move (just bogs down the engine).  It will not shift into hi gear.  This tractor is new to me.  Any ideas what the problem may be before I tear into it blindly?  Any advice on what to try or look for would be appreciated.  Thanks

Answer

  Hello,

The bottom the shift lever has jumped out of place where it attaches to the shift fork for low gear.  When you took it out of low gear, the shift lever went to neutral, but the gear stayed engaged.  That's why it is still in low gear when the lever is in neutral.  Now when you shift it into another gear, you're actually in 2 gears at once which will lock up the transmission, stalling the engine.  I don't have any way of looking up the repair procedure, but the shift lever assembly or transmission top cover will have to be removed so the low shift fork can be pushed back to neutral position, and worn parts replaced.
