Tractor Repair: wont start, check battery, diesel tractor

Question
My diesel tractor will not start.  When I turn the ignition key, I only hear a clicking noise.  Help!

Answer
My tractor worked like a charm.  Now when you turn the key it just makes a clicking noise and doesn't turn over.  What is the most likely cause?  Can I test with a voltmeter?  Thank you.

Hi CLAUDIA
I get a vast amount of questions on this subject poor starting
THE BATTERY COULD BE A BIT LOW----
Check battery Voltage with a meter if you can. A good 12v battery should read about 12.5 –13.5v when fully charged.
11.5 VOLTS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. CHARGE IT NOW.

ANOTHER PROBLEM COULD BE.---

The problem usually comes down to poor electrical contacts at the battery and also the starter connections. These wires seem to corrode especially when left unattended for any length of time, might be a good idea to disconnect the main   lead if you do not expect to use this machine for a few weeks.
Anyway disconnect now and polish these wire ends and also the main battery posts reconnect with a little copper grease or Vaseline over the connections.
Also check all other connection visually.
Also some meters have a continuity setting --- when the 2 contacts are made    -
They ring a bell or buzzer this can be used to check if the current is getting through from a to b.
Good luck.
