Tractor Repair: Ford 1210 power loss, ford 1210, injector lines

Question
While moving dirt today my Ford 1210 diesel lost power.  It starts and idles fine but whcn pulling or over about 1000 rpm it knocks loud and hard and pours out black smoke.  It is not overheated and removing the air filter does not help the condition.

I'm a good gasoline mech but this is my first diesel...where else would you suggest I start looking for the problem?

Thanks,

Answer
Curt it sounds like it could be a crook(sick or damaged) injector as removing the air cleaner should make it run better.
Remove the air cleaner to engine rubber hose to look inside the manifold to see if there is any think caught in it.
Also look at the hose as some times they peel on the inside acting like a valve shutting the air to the engine  causing black smoke and may be a knock.
You can then check the injectors start the tractor and open the injector lines one at a time open the engine should die down if this is ok then move to the next and do the same.
Check to see if you have one of the injectors not working then you may need to remove and send for servicing.
Curt hope this helps drop me a line and let me know how you go.
