Hi Danny,      1965 Diesel
I have a 3 clinder Ford tractor with a CAV pump. Be sure to mention the bleed BOLT hidden on top of the fuel filter. I was trying to bleed the system and had fuel all over the place. The battery cable came off the solenoid....and ignited the spilled fuel. Had I known how to bleed the system I would have saved the starter and perhaps the injector pump. Of course all the injector returns...gone  are the wiring etc.

This is a statement,I guess, rather than a question. But since I don't
recall you mentioning the bleeder.....just had to! Important.

Phillip further to your statement not all tractors have the bleed screw on top of the filter and most Ford tractors I have worked on they have not
had it.
Phillip I am sorry to hear about your fire and the loss of a lot of components on the tractor.
But could you please tell me how the battery leed fell off the solinoide
as it is held on by a nut ?.
Yes if it fell off and touched earth it could start a fire.

Hi Danny,  The cable end was held on by a crimp, not a good thing. I have worked on bulldozers and all kinds of equipment for over 50 years and never had a fire problem. Now let me say in case you are not aware ot it, the modern fuel you buy at the station pump.....says WHOOSE almost like gasoline. The diesels on the road are hot today.
Had I been aware of the volatility of the fuel, of course things would have been handled differently. Expensive lesson. Just wanted to pass this on....stupidity after you know!  Thank you   Philip Jensen

When I bleed the fuel system on a tractor I try not to have fuel running every where by using rag to soak up the running fuel and disposing of the rag before trying to start the engine.
Phillip these are basic safety items taught in most training classes.
Again I am sorry to hear about your fire I hope you did not get hurt in any way and could you let me know when your question was answered by me as I do not remember it.

Phillip thank you for the information no I did not know that the new fuel was that way I am in Australia.
We are only just getting the new high tech fuels here.
