BMW Repair: BMW 316 (Manufactured 1987) Queries, rubber hammer, window switches

Question
Hi there,

I seek your expert advice on the following minor problems I have with my 'old'BMW 316, manufactured in 1987 (Chassis No:WBAAC520101761262;Engine No:00204055;Engine Capacity:1766cc Fuel:Petrol;Manual Transmission)

Mileometer & Trip meter suddenly stopped working.
Rear electric windows do not work-open/close.
Central locking only works from the boot of the car from where I open/close my car.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Sincerely,
ANTON.

Answer
Anton,
The Odometer (mileometer) is notorious for not working past a certain age.  The gears get soft, and crumble, and dont turn the drums for the mileage.  On a good note, you can go to: www.odometergears.com and buy replacement gears for it.

The rear windows might have a child safety swich, to turn them off.  Make sure this switch is working correctly.  If not, then test voltage to the rear window switches, if they have it, then test to the window motors...  I highly doubt you would have two motors that are blown at the same time.  If they are getting voltage, I would take a rubber hammer and tap (lightly) on the motor while you are pressing the switch to roll the window down. Sometimes they dont get used, and they lock up.

Central locking will have to be traced out.  There are numerous possibilites for this problem, and there's no way I could figure it out without seeing the car.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh
