Tractor Repair: Ford 1520 Starter, ford 1520 tractor, auto electrician

Question
Hello Danny,
I am having problembs with a Mitsubishi Starter motor on a 1989 ford 1520 Tractor.
Most times when turning the starter key there is a very loud grinding noise followed by the starter turning but not turning the enginge. When the starter works there is no untoward noises.
I have replaced the solonoid, checked all components for condition and operation, turned the flywheel with a screwdriver and checked the starter ring teeth. I ran the starter withdrawn from the housing and observed the gear throwing out and turning with no extra noises.
Not allways but it does appear to be better when the engine has warmed up.

I am at a loss! Can you please suggest anything?

Answer
Howard I feel that the solinoide is pulling the main section of starter into operation before the bendix is in mesh with the flywheel.
This can be caused by the solioide not being adjusted correctly this is at the pivot point just below where the solinoide attaches to the starter.
I think that taking the starter to a auto electrician to check it out would be a good idea as if you destroy the ring gear it will cost a lot more money to repair.
