Triumph Repair: 1979 Spit Bumper Swap, mansfields, descrition

Question
Howard, My son and I are swapping the big black uglies on our 1979 Spitfire for chrome and we are going to attack the big ugly front brackets that held onto the "Jane Mansfields".  How much of the brackets can we take off without messing up the hinge for the bonnet?  I have seen the articles, but never seen a good descrition of what can come off and what needs to stay.  We have a pair of driving lights to cover up whatever unsightliness there will be.  We have the sawzall and grinder ready to go at it. Grateful for any guidance. Thank you.  Doug

Answer
Sorry Douglas,

Even though I do a lot of modifying and fabracation, I have never done that one before. I agree with what you are doing as I also didn't like the looks of that Spitfire and if I had one I too would be doing what you are doing.

You are just going to have to remove the "uglies" and then see what you may need to fabricate to make the older ones fit. I don't think you will need to cut anything away that supports the hinge to do all of this.

Sorry I am not any help here.

Howard
