Triumph Repair: Spitfire 1500 Bell Housing to Gearbox, clutch release, tension springs

Question
I removed the bell housing from the gearbox on '79 1500 the bushing in the rear of the bell housing part which protrudes into the bell housing had become worn away and snapped off due to the oscillation of the clutch operating leaver becoming unhinged and floating.
I have to replace that bushing/oil seal.  My parts catalogue shows 2 types one which has a rubber seal and what appears to be a one piece, I can see no sign of any rubber parts at the back of my bell housing and so presume I need the one piece meatal (is this what the catalogue refers to as a scroll seal/bushing? bushing/seal?
Also the parts catalogue requires 3 tension springs be inserted in holes in the front, lower of the gearcase.  I see 3 holes, but no springs in them. What are they for and do they just slide in the holes?

Answer
Hi James,

There are no springs in between the gearbox case and the bell housing. The sleeve that supports the clutch release bearing slider is inserted into the bell housing from the gearbox side and sticks out into the clutch area and there is no rubber seal. Only the older Spitfires had a front seal in the back of that sleeve and in front of the front bearing. The only springs even in that area were also only on the old gearbox and they were not in between the gearbox and the bell housing but were in the top of the gearbox under the top cover. (three of them)

Some parts manuals try to cover all models and get the terminology mixed up. You should purchase a service manual for the late model Spitfire from either Haynes or Bentley as they both show good drawings of the pieces and how they are in place.

Parts books from suppliers are sometimes misleading due to them trying to cover too many models with one drawing.
