Triumph Repair: engine 1972, Triumph spitfire, alligator clip, wd 40

Question
trying to start it, it turns over and fires but only with the key turned (running on the starter)figured that it was not getting continous power from coil? it last ran 2 years ago, am I looking for a faullty piece (starter sulinoid, other, etc.)

Answer
Ryan, you could kind of check the coil by running a wire from the battery POS post directly to the POS terminal on the coil. use a alligator clip at one end so you can  pull the connection or you won't be able to turn it off if it does start running. If that trick makes the car run then I think it is the IGNITION SWITCH itself! make sure everything is in place like fresh gas and that the carb needle and float isn't stuck closed as they will when one sits up awhile.spray a little WD-40 in the throat of the carb, if it pops and try's to start then it is a fuel problem. the solonoid is working if the engine turns over that is about it's only job.Dave
