Triumph Repair: TR7 front subframe, pristine car, cross member

Question
Howard,

I need to move my long term project TR7 to the other side of my garage (to fit my XJ6 in !) but the front suspension is out.  I just put the front subframe back in, is it strong enough to take the weight of the front of the car on a floor jack like the subframe of a Jag XJ6 is ?   Reason is I was thinking of moving it by putting a dolly under the subframe at one end and the diff at the other.  Or is this a bad idea ?

Thanks,

  Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

I use the front cross member to raise the TR-7's and never had a problem. The cross member is very strong. I do at times use a piece of wood to spread the load more evenly so as not to put a dent in the metal from a pointed edge of the jack pad that most floor jacks have.

I always use a piece of wood on the rear of an XJ-6 as the metal is a little thin and the weight of the car is high and any jack pad will dent them. The TR-7 is not very heavy in the front end so I usually don't worry about it unless it is a pristine car and belongs to someone else then I will use a piece of wood.

If you don't want to put the front cross member in just to move it I use a 3ft piece of 4x4 wood that I use often to put across the body on many different cars for moving them around. Works well and don't even scratch up stuff.
