Triumph Repair: E Type Carbs, stromberg carbs, jet adjustment

Question
Howard, I have 1970 series 2 e type.  It had two Stromberg carbs but now has 3 dcoe45 webers.  I want go the triple su setup and have a set but my set must be older as it uses the starting carb (electric) choke.  I think that was correct for 150s.  I think they are HD8s though.  Can I use them and should the wiring be hot all the time?  Is there a switch that should be operated from inside the car?  As always.....many thanks.....Rory

Answer
Hi Rory,

The starting carburetor use a vertical mounted electrical solenoid with two wires. One was a ground and the other was a hot wire that was switched on when the choke was used. Next to the solenoid is the jet adjustment and a spring loaded needle head. When the solenoid is activated, air rushes in the carb and the needle is pulled down until it his the adjusting nut. counter clockwise is rich and clockwise is leaner. leave the throttles closed when using the choke.
I thought is worked quite well.

If you have the temperature switch in the manifold you can set it up as automatic by powering the solenoid and run the ground over to the temp switch. I always like to operate the choke manually as I never trusted the temp switch. If you set it up with the temp switch you will have to power the solenoid from an ignition on power source.
