Triumph Repair: 1500 Spitfire solenoid to coil wiring, ballast resistor, starter solenoid

Question
Hi, I have to replace starter solenoid, but the new one given to me only has ONE small spade, on right for WR to ignition switch. The spade for WY to coil is blanked off.

Can I connect coil WY to WR's spade as a double, or have I been given wrong replacement solenoid, please? Or could I wire WY from coil to another part of the solenoid?

Appreciate your help on this.

Robin

Answer
Hi Robin,

When you have a two small spade connectors with a wire on each on a solenoid, it is a bypass system of a resistor wire or ballast resistor to a 6v coil system for the ignition system. The answer is "Yes" they gave you the wrong solenoid for your car.

Most Spitfires have had the ignition changed due to the high failure rate of the original Opus/Lucas electronic ignition system. So you first need to examine the system on your car to see if it still uses a low voltage (usually 6v) coil and a bypass system while in the "Start" position. If it still uses a 6v coil and a bypass starting power for the coil, then you do need the correct solenoid.

If the system has been changed and a 12v coil with a direct power from the ignition switch, then you can eliminate the bypass system and use a one spade solenoid.

You should look at the wiring diagram of your car and compare it to your car to see if it is original at the coil and distributor.

If you don't have a diagram, let me know what year your spitfire is and I will post a diagram on my web site for you to copy.
