Triumph Repair: 76 TR6 clutch issue, clutch pressure plate, travel restriction

Question
I have a 76 TR6 that the clutch was ok on but the owner wanted an aluminum flywheel put in. Prior to installation the clutch had no issues. Now when you push in the clutch and go shift when you release the clutch it grabs right away, before there was some free play. Any suggestions would be great, Has a new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, slave, master, and lines. System has beend bled out multiple times.

Answer
Hi Cory,

That is a common problem with the TR-6. From what I seen the factory cut it too close on the design and there is not enough travel in the clutch due to the master cylinder being too small in bore or the slave being too large. It has been a long time but I do remember there being two sizes of master cylinder bores used in the TR-6. I use to use the wrong year model cylinder to get the larger bore so as to gain more travel in the clutch.

I am just working from memory so you need to measure the bore of your cylinder and check with your supplier to see which was the larger bore cylinder, the early or late TR-6. As I remember there was no modifying necessary as each would bolt up.

I had many customers complain about that and some wanted to put in a nicer thick carpet and couldn't because of the pedal travel restriction. Some Spitfires had the same problem.

I even thought about finding a smaller piston and seal for the slave cylinder and make sleeves for the slave cylinders to correct the problem, but I left the dealerships before doing it.
