QUESTION: Hi howard thanks for help float I thik is 11/16. mixture screw Ive tried 1/2 turn to 2 turns. since Ive ask question went back to work on it thinking I have a vacume leak and noticed the u shape pipe with asbestos was very loose . tighted it, started car . when I started to shut choke it was all most idling. so now with choke out or in I can start and almost keep it running trying to rev it up  with choke in or out but now acts like running out of fuel even with choke out    mike

ANSWER: Hi Mike, tell me what you are calling the "Mixture screw". The mixture screw is a Allen screw down in the bottom of the top of the carb under the plastic screw cap. You take a 3mm Allen down into the oil in the top and turn the screw clockwise to richen and counter clockwise to Lean the mixture.

Was the diaphragm in good condition? and was there oil in the top pot?

Try spraying starting fluid into the intake to see if you can keep it running on starting fluid. Also you need to test the fuel pressure. (1.5 to 3 PSI at the carb.)

QUESTION: hi howard, the mixture screw with allen screw is screwed clockwise till it stops. diaphragm is new,and there is oil in top pot. I can pull choke out, push gas pedel down once. it will start right up,if you leave choke all the way out it will die,if you push choke in where its about 1/4 of the way out it will idle fine but if you push choke all the way in or give it any gas it will die like no fuel. I can choke with my hand, shut choke off,rev it up,it will run ok as long as I choke with hand. it will also run fine if you squirt gas or starting fluid dont have anything to test presure but took hose off at carb, cranked engine and fuel squirts out. also took off bowl to see if still full of fuel, and it is thanks for all the help.  mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

When you choke by hand you increase the vacuum in the intake so that it draws more fuel from the jet. Normally the air going in over the Venturi creates a vacuum in the jet which draws fuel into the air stream. For some reason in your case this is not happening. The only thing I can think of is that possibly your anti dieseling system is active when it is not suppose to be active until the ignition is turned off. The anti dieseling system applies vacuum to the float chamber when the ignition is turned off thus preventing any fuel from exiting the jet.

To test if that is what is wrong, just remove the vent hose from the carburetor that goes over to the valve at the charcoal canister. This disables the anti-dieseling system and vents the float chamber to outside air.
