Triumph Repair: 1980 Triumph Tr7, stromberg carburetors, 10w30 oil

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased a 1980 Triumph TR7 that has not been started for 3 years. I was able to start it, but it idles at 2,100 -2,400 rpms, what do you think is causing this problem? Is there anything i can do to bring it back to normal.

Thank You!

ANSWER: Hi Jose,

Has not been run in 3 yrs and idles at 2,100 - 2,400 RPM, narrows the possible causes to only 1000.

Next, you have to do some testing. First is it injected or carburetor? Then I can give you some tests to run.

Answer
Hi Jose,

10w30 oil is ok for the oil. No, It will not cause a fast idle.

The most common problem with the Stromberg carburetors is the automatic choke system. They are a high failure part of the car and can hold the throttle open. First look at the linkage and find the fast idle screw to see if the choke is holding the throttle open.
