Audio Systems: Factory CD Player in 1998 Ford Mustang GT - Mach 460, mach 460, fuse box

Question
My CD player, which is mounted separately and below the head unit, is no longer working.  It stopped functioning when I put a CD in.  The lighting on the buttons still comes on with the dash lights when I turn the headlights on, but the display is not working either.

I had this problem once before and it lasted a few months.  One day I just pressed Eject and the CD came back out and began working again.

There is a company close by that swaps out factory electronics but for $200+.

Can I repair it myself?  Should I start by checking the fuse box?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
Carl,
If the problem showed up before it sounds like a defective connection in either the CD unit or the stereo. You could try to locate any defective connections by using an X10 magnifier and go over the complete circuit boards.
