Triumph Repair: Replacing valve guides, valve guides, auto machine

Question
I've a 1976 Spitfire cylinder head that I would like to replace the valve guides. How are they removed?

Answer
Hi Peter,

The guides are driven out usually with a guide drift and hammer. Some machine shops press them out. If you have the head off it would be advisable to just take the head to a auto machine shop and have the guides replaced because sometimes a reamer is needed to get the stem to guide clearance correct. Most machine shops don't charge much to do the job and they have the equipment and experience to do it quickly.

I have extensive engine building experience and still found it easier and cheaper to just have a machine shop put guides in for me.
