Triumph Repair: Spit replacement Steering rack, axle grease, rubber boots

Question
Hi,
put a replacement rack on my 72 GT6,i ordered the Spitfire one from Victoria British as there doesn't seem to be one for the GT,it fits ok albeit steering is heavier now due to ratio no doubt, the rack came from a company called Lacay in Argentina,as you probably know VB has no tech assistance, anyway there is no grease fitting, instead of the removable cap where you put the grease nipple in there is a large size Allen key threaded cap with no facility to grease or oil,i have squeezed the rubber boots and it feels a little dry in there so i'm wondering what i can do.I did stumble into a message board that said the Argentinian rack has nylon parts and doesn't need routine lube but what about inside the rubber boots surely there should be grease in there,if you type in Victoria British spitfire steering rack you will see the allen key nut in the picture.
  Thanks,Barry

Answer
Hi Barry,

The GT-6 recommends that you use a grease fitting in place of the plug in top of the rack at the pinion box and pump 5 pumps of axle grease in every 12,000 miles. and if you were to have it apart and you should pack it with grease when assembling it. You should not be able to feel any grease in the boots by squeezing them.

I have not seen the Victoria British unit and without any instructions with the rack I would just do the same as the factory unit.

Also the factory rack was a 4 1/2 turns lock to lock.
