Triumph Repair: 1973 Spitfire 1500 - mechanical tach, british car club, thrust washer

Question
QUESTION: The tachometer isn't working on my Spit. If you disconnect it from the distributor and spin the cable, the needle moves, so I believe it is a mechanical problem inside the distributor. Is this something that can be repaired? or is most likely something that will require the purchase of a new distributor?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

ANSWER: Hi Blaine,
While you were checking, why didn't you check the other end to see if the drive gear was trying to turn the cable? Some of those parts are available without purchasing a complete distributor. You are going to have to see what is wrong first. Then try to source the part.

QUESTION: Thanks Howard, I was actually relaying the information told me by the PO without investigating personally, but have now done so with a very clear understanding of the problem.

The core plug, tach drive gear and thrust washer are all missing from the distributor housing. I haven't been successful in locating those parts. Do you have any suggestions? How concerned should I be that there has been this exposed hole in the distributor housing? What are your feelings about switching to a newer electronic ignition distributor? Are tachometers made for electronic distributors that match the speedometer appearance for a 73 spitfire?

My continued thanks for your generous assistance.

Regards,

Blaine

Answer
Get in contact with your local British car club, many Spitfire owners have parts cars or locate a British car shop in your area, they often have used parts or know of those in the area who do. Also contact Moss Motors as I believe they have a distributor rebuild plan.
