Triumph Repair: Front wheel bearing oil seal 72 Spitfire, wheel hub, cup shape

Does the felt on the front wheel bearing oil seal face the inner bearing or the vertical link? On my vehicle I had one facing the bearing and one missing. The Haynes shows it both ways depending on the picture you reference.

Hi John,
It has been a long time since I put those felt seals in but I clearly remember the retainer is a cup shape and the felt fits into the cup and the cup is pressed into the wheel hub "felt first" so the end result is you can see the metal cup and only a small inner portion of the felt. First soak the felt in oil before you install it. There were rubber lip type replacement seals available back then.
