Triumph Repair: Overdrive on 78 spitfire, infinite wisdom, gear oil

Question
QUESTION: How do you add transmission fluid so the overdrive will respond quicker. It works but it takes several minutes in engage.

ANSWER: Hi John,
If you presently have gear oil in it as the books tell you to use, you can drain that and use engine oil to get a quicker response.

QUESTION: I guess I should have asked: How to add gear oil to the transmission? Mine is low and the overdrive is responding slow because of it. I read there is a filler hole located on the outside of the transmission but I can't seem to find it.

Answer
Hi John,
The oil filler / level plug is on the side of the gearbox but just filling it will not correct the problem. You need to drain the old oil out then fill it with engine oil. Since BLM in their infinite wisdom (or lack of) has left out a drain plug you will have to pump it out through the filler / level plug.
If you intend to keep this car you should invest in a service manual for these simple procedures.
