Triumph Repair: TR6 Turn signs/Flashers, turn signal switch, failure point

Question
Dear Jim,
I recently had problems with my turn signals. I had my mechanic replace the turn signal switch. The right turn signal position wouldn't stay. Since then,I've had problems with the actual turn signals. I've replaced the flashers and switch. When I put indicator on left the flasher acknowledges
it but it doesn't relay it to the actual lights. When I put it to the right hand turn signal, the flashes don't acknowledge it in any way, when I put the hazards on, only the right side front and rear come on the right side doesn't come on.  Thanks for any light you can shed.

Confused,
Pete

Answer
Pete,

I'm a bit confused also.  When I'm confused, the best bet is to get properly grounded.

Speaking of which, have you checked the ground leads at all the turn signal lamp units?  That's a common failure point for the turn signals.   The setup depends upon the lamps drawing current (aka.. lighting) and when they don't the system truly doesn't work.

I'm guessing when you say "the flashers don't acknowledge it in any way" you're basically saying that none of the lights light up on the side you're trying.

There is one flasher unit.   There is one turn signal switch, on the steering column.  There is one hazard light switch on the dashboard.   What is supposed to happen is that when using the turn signals you complete a circuit for the appropriate side (left, right) that includes the flasher unit.   When you turn on the hazard light switch it's supposed to connect both sets of turn signal lights into the same circuit as the flasher unit.

If you had your mechanic replace the turn signal switch and then the turn signals stopped working, isn't that an issue for the mechanic?

Cheers,

Jim
