Triumph Repair: torquatrol unit assembly, tolerance ring, viscous coupling

Question
Howard, I recently replaced the pulley assembly on my sisters 1979 TR7 with a new one. I asked the parts vendor about replacing the tolerance ring and he said I could use the old one. Well needless to say my sister came back from a trip in the car and described how she heard a clunking noise and thought she saw a big yellow bird fly past her window. Dang if it was not the whole fan assemply!!!!! Well we ordered a whoel new assembly including the "TOLERANCE RING". Is there any special precautions or methods I should be aware of when pressing the viscous coupling over the shaft and new "TOLERANCE RING"???
THANKS   BRIAN and JOYCE

Answer
Hi Brian,
No, you should not reuse that ring as it is crushed once installed and can not be reused (as you found out the hard way). I have installed many while working on TR-7s and there is no special method, just be careful that it stays in it's groove as you press the fan clutch on.
