Triumph Repair: 79 triumph spitfire 1500, clutch hydraulics, triumph spitfire 1500

Question
Two questions, 1. Do you know what size and length bolts are used to connect the drive shaft to the differential? 2. I am trying to get my car started after being stored for the past 8 years at my dad's house.  It was down with a torn up differential and a hole in the gas tank.  I got both of those items repaired and am anxious to try and get it running again.  Is there any other items I should change out (ie. hoses, fluids, etc.) or any special sequence I should do to get the engine started?

Answer
Scott,

After 8 years of sitting, lots of checks to make.

Look for evidence of rodent damage to the electrical wires (and everything else!).   If you see bare wires or cut wires... don't even think of hooking up a battery until everything is checked and repaired.

The battery is most likely trash.   Don't try to start the car by jumping it... with a dead battery in place your likely to just kill the starter, and the alternator if the car does start.

They won't affect starting, but the brake and clutch hydraulics will likely need attention also.

Look over the radiator hoses.  If they're soft or show signs of cracking, it's cheaper to replace them in your driveway than to need a tow home.

Also look at the tires for dry rotting, and see if they've taken a set (deformed) or look like the belts are separating under the tread.

And I'm sure you've already replaced the rubber fuel line from the frame to the pump and from the pump up to the carb?

Cheers,

Jim
