Triumph Repair: 1972 TR6 flexible steering coupling, allen head screws, channel lock pliers

Question
Having difficulty getting replacement coupling assembled. I have gotten two of the capscrews engaged, but cannot get the other two Allen head screws aligned. It appears the flexible coupling needs to be compressed some to bring its holes in synch with the lower steering rods coupling but just can't accomplish it. What is the trick I am missing? I used to race Spitfires so I have some mechanical skills, but this one is a toughy.

Thanks,

Tom from Indy

Answer
Hi Tom,
Rotating the steering shaft so as to force the one you are working with closer may help a little and then use of a pair of large channel lock pliers to force the coupler together so that you may be able to get it better aligned. I put a piece of cardboard one each jaw of the pliers so as not to cut into the rubber.
