Triumph Repair: TR6 Calipers, caliper piston, dust covers

Question
Need help installing the caliper piston dust covers, is
there a trick.
Does the wire ring and the groove in the dust cover go over
the machined ring on the caliper?

Thanks for the help, mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
It is not easy to install the boots and then get the wire ring installed over the boot.
I made a tool out of a piece of coat hangar wire by bending a short (about 3/8") 90 degree bend in one end and loop at the other end as a handle. Then rounded the tip of the end and smoothed it so as not to tare or cut the boots. I used that as a hook and run it around the inside of the boot to pull the boot on to the lip. Then forced one open end of the wire on to the edge of the boot and worked the wire on to the boot. When I had a tough one I would use my home made tool and hook the inside of the wire and slide it around the wire ring just like I did the boot to pull the wire ring into place.

After doing it many times it was not as hard but even after years of doing it I can never say it was easy.
