Triumph Repair: Fuel doesnt want to go into the gas tank, gas nozzle, spitfire 1500

Question
Hi,

I've got a '78 Spitfire 1500, CA car.  When I try to put gas into the tank it back washes out again.  If I take the gas nozzle out I can see the gas slowly going into the tank.  Using a funnel helps a little but doesn't solve the problem, it still tends to back up, just not so much.  It has a restrictor cap but I'm sure I've got the nozzle in far enough to get past it.  My guess is that air is supposed to escape somewhere when I put gas into the tank but this isn't happening which causes the gas to come back up.  I'm just don't know where to look for the solution.

As far as I know it's a pretty standard CA car.  Recently passed smog so that at least gives a good hint that the emissions stuff is working correctly.

Thanks for your time in answering,

Mark

Answer
Mark,

Does the problem only happen at one gas station, or all the gas stations you go to?

In the emission system there are vent lines that should go to the carbon cannisters in the front of the car.  If any of those lines are blocked then you'll have problems with venting the tank.

Have you tried putting the gas in slowly?

Cheers,

Jim
