Triumph Repair: 1972 TR6 Trans question, personal knowledge, trf

Question
I am intrested in buying a 72 TR6 w/overdrive. Owner is telling me that the trans experiences "Typical" gear breakage issues that were prevelant in 72's that require attention. He say's 2nd gear has problems but works. I have not driven car so I cannot offer personal knowledge. He mentions that the factory was aware of gear-trans problems and made change-fix in 73 and later models. Is this a deal breaker or an easy fix?
Thank you,
Tom

Answer
This typically means the synchro on 2nd is going or gone.  While you might be able to still drive by being gentle and double clutching, eventually you will need to rebuild the transmission.  And since it is an OD, the OD may need work as well, which makes it more expensive rebuild than just a straight 4 speed.

If you want the car, you should find out the cost of a OD tranny rebuild and factor that into your decision.  You will eventually need to rebuild it.
