Triumph Repair: 1979 TR. Spitfire, factory specs, time jeff

Question
Howard,

Say, I'm having a difficult time getting my triumph to idle correctly/smoothly! At curb/low idle it wants to 'seek'! The idle goes up and down. Also, my fuel/air mix adjustment doesn't seem to make a difference , or at least nothing significant. Is there maybe a relationship?

Here's another question for you. My rpm meter reads about 200 rpms different than the gauge inside the car. Is this a normal thing?

I've always used my gauge, and it's functioning perfectly. I was thinking maybe this might be a common thing for British gauges?

I've taken the carb apart and it seems to be in working order. Any ideas?

I hope you have a fun/safe New Year's Eve. Thanks for your time.

Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,
Your symptoms are useless other than to tell you that you need to run some tests.
First and most important is a compression test. throttle open and at least 4 or 5 revolutions on each cylinder. Let me have the results.

Second is to set the timing to factory specs. This is important.

Third is to warm the engine up to operating temp and set the idle below 1000 RPM and lift the spring loaded pin on the side of the carb under the lip of the top pot. Note the results and let me know. Then I will give you the next procedure.
