Triumph Repair: 76 triumph spitfire, pressure relief valve, air bubbles

Question
I just had the engine rebuilt, before installing the distibuter I tried to get oil pressure in the engine by inserting a screwdriver conected to my portable drill to turn the pump rotating it closewise but I couldn't get any oil flow does it turn anti clockwise?

Answer
Yes anti-clockwise.  If you have done nothing to prime the oil pump (pack with vaseline, assembly lube, or some low temp grease suitable to mix with oil), then it may take a long time for the pump to "grab"

Normal process is to pack some assembly lube (not a lot) into the oil pump rotor when assembling the oil pump.

Then backfill, from the oil filter mounting, oil, so it runs down into the area where the oil pressure relief valve is.  This should cause enough "suction" to be created so when you spin the oil pump counter clockwise, you'll suck oil up from the pan.  Keep going a while, as you will hear air bubbles work their way through the system, and the drill will have a noticeable drop in RPM, and want to twist in your hand, in response to the resistance to the oil.

With an fresh rebuild you should see easily above 70lbs, if not higher, when spinning with an 18V drill (my experience)  I've only seen lower #s when doing this on an engine that has a few miles on it, so there is naturally some wear in the bearings & corresponding clearances.
