Triumph Repair: 73 triumph spitfire dist., speedometer drive, drive shaft

Question
 When disassembling the dist.,to get the shaft out of the housing does the speedometer drive gear need to be re moved if so does the freeze plug have to come out in order to remove the speddo gear?

Hi Ron,
The factory advises to drive or drill a hole in the press in plug and pry it out. I'm not sure you could drive the speedo drive shaft in to knock the plug out without damaging the shaft so it is best to play it safe and either punch a hole or drill a hole in the plug and pry it out. Then you can remove the speedo gear. As I remember the shaft comes out the top so you are going to have to remove the pin and lower drive off of the shaft.
