Triumph Repair: clutch 76 triumph spitfire, haines manual, hex drive

Question
QUESTION:  I'm having trouble properly truing the pressure plate to the fly wheel with the hex drive bolts.Does the nut and lock washer for earlier models work?

ANSWER: There are typically 3 alignment dowels, and then 6 bolts to hold down the pressure plate.   If you have the alignment dowels, there should be no truing required.

If you are talking about the tool for aligning the clutch disc, I believe the tool is the same for all TR6 models.

QUESTION:  In the Haines  manual it suggest torqing the 6 bolts to 22 lbf or 30 nm .When doing this the cap screws began to strip so I went with 8 grade and they snapped before I reached the 22lbf . What can you suggest.

Answer
If I remember correctly, these are 1/4-28 bolts, which can't take a lot of torque.  I would suggest calibrating or checking your torque wrench against a known standard.  Verify you have the correct length, as you may have bottomed out before you compressed the plate to the flywheel.

If you are looking for suggestions on how to get out, I would first try left handed drill bits, which you can pick up cheap at harbor freight.  You might get lucky, and drilling in the direction of "lefty-loosey" may spin the bolts out, if you had a clean hole to begin with.

Next step would be a small set of easy outs, drill a pilot hole, tap in with a hammer, and work out.  Since you are working with small diameter metals, you can't put alot of muscle into this, you have to finesse them out.
