Triumph Repair: left signal light and hazards, turn signal switch, triumph spitfire 1500

Question
I am having problem with my 1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500, I just bought it a few months ago and don't know a lot about previous repairs.  The left signal light will come on and sometimes flash slowly and then not flash at all.  The hazards are not working, but the horn, headlight (high, low beam)and the right signal light are all working well.  We've tried replacing the switch and it didn't help.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Alecia,
The flasher unit flashes by the resistance of the bulbs it is connected to by the turn signal switch. If a turn signal system works correctly in one direction then it means the flasher is OK. when you turn to the other direction and it flashes very rapidly then either there is a short in the wiring or someone has put a high wattage bulb in that side. If it flashes very slowly or just lights one bulb then most likely one of the bulbs is either burned out or disconnected.

You need to check front and back on the side that does not work and check both bulbs. (including the grounds) If both bulbs are good, you need to take a 12v test light and test the socket on front and back on the bad side. (check the ground of the socket also)

The four way flasher has it's own flasher unit and needs to be tested after you correct the turn signals.
