Land Rover Repair: 2003Disc Brakes, land rover dealer, land rover dealers

Question
Hi John, Happy to have found you! My Disc just went in for service.( New dealership here on Cape) The brakes have sucked since I bought it. I asked them to once aghain check them... it has 25,000 miles and the warranty runs out next month. They said the rear branks need to be replaced, and the front brakes are at 70% in need of replacement. I can not believe a vehicle with 25,000 miles in 4 years needs brakes. Is this common? I love the vehicle, but am torn on deciding to keep it, or sell due to excessive repair costs. I was told I really need to get the extended warranty also due to so many problems on these Disc. Thanks so much ! Debbie on Cape Cod

Answer
It is the policy of most Land Rover dealers to replace pads and rotors together.  I have found you can usually re-use the rotors through the second set of pads.

If you re-use the rotors there is a greater chance of squeaks or noises than with new parts, but in my opinon the small risk of noise is worth in view of the $$$ saved.

Land Rover dealer policy is opposite mine.

Neither is right or wrong, just different.

As regards brakes, we sometimes do change pads at 25,000.  It depends on how the truck is driven.

As regards warranty - I agree about that but I suggest you consider the choice there.  APCO is the extended warranty subsidiary of Ford, who owns Land Rover.  The policy they sell through the dealer requires you to return to that dealer for all repairs under the plan.

So if you prefer independent shops that is not so good.

They offer another plan, TotalCare, with the same coverage but you are allowed to have work done at any licensed repair facility, not just the LR dealer.

In my opinion, that's a better plan.  Cost may be a few hundred more but the freedom of choice is worth it IMO.
